Offshore Trolling Tips for Fishing Heavy Sargassum Grass: How to Catch More Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish & More
Sargassum grass can be both a blessing and a curse for offshore anglers. While floating weed lines attract baitfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo, sailfish, and countless other pelagic species, excessive sargassum can make trolling frustrating when your lures constantly foul with weeds.
Over the years, we've spent countless hours offshore targeting mahi, tuna, sailfish, wahoo, and other gamefish in conditions ranging from scattered weed patches to miles of continuous sargassum mats. Through plenty of trial and error, we've learned a few simple adjustments that can dramatically increase your success when trolling in heavy grass conditions.
1. Keep Your Lures Closer to the Boat
Trust us—we love running lures way back behind the boat. Long shotgun lines and spread-out presentations are a staple of offshore trolling.
However, when offshore waters are loaded with sargassum grass, keeping your lures closer to the boat and in your prop wash often keeps your lures cleaner for longer.
The reason is simple: your boat's prop wash chops up the grass and creates cleaner water immediately behind the vessel. The boat hull also helps push weeds aside and keeps your lures running cleaner for longer periods.
When grass is particularly heavy, we typically won't run trolling lures from the outriggers at all. Instead, we'll concentrate our spread closer to the transom where the water is cleaner and easier to manage.
A lure that's swimming clean behind the boat will typically always outperform one dragging a ball of grass.
2. Run Squid Skirts Over Ballyhoo and Choose Weed-Friendly Lure Designs
Heavy sargassum calls for smarter lure selection.
One of our favorite tricks is running squid skirts in front of rigged ballyhoo. The skirt helps deflect grass while adding extra attraction and durability to the presentation.
We also favor bullet-style trolling lures and concave-faced heads during heavy weed conditions. These concaved face designs tend to throw water effectively while helping shed grass before it can foul the hook.
Some of our go-to choices include:
- Bullet lures
- Chuggers (cupped face)
- Witches
- Feathers
- Squid skirt and ballyhoo/mullet combinations
These styles consistently stay cleaner and remain productive even when weed conditions are challenging.
3. Match Hook Size to the Width of the Lure Head
One mistake we often see is newer anglers using hooks that are oversized for the lure they're pulling.
Large hooks extending well beyond the profile of the lure create additional surfaces for sargassum to grab onto. This quickly results in fouled baits and missed opportunities.
Instead, choose a hook size that closely matches the width of the lure head. Keeping the hook profile compact helps reduce weed accumulation while maintaining excellent hookup ratios.
A properly sized hook allows the lure to be lighter and swim more naturally so they stay cleaner.
4. Increase Trolling Speed by 1–2 MPH
This tip has made a huge difference for us over the years.
When fishing heavy sargassum, try increasing your trolling speed by 1 to 2 mph above your normal pace.
A slightly faster speed creates a more intense and aggressive prop wash behind the boat that helps keep grass out of your trolling spread. The cleaner water behind the boat allows your lures stay clean longer.
We've learned this through years of trial and error, and it's one of the first adjustments we make whenever offshore conditions become loaded with grass.
Don't be afraid to experiment with speed until you find the sweet spot that keeps your spread running clean.
Final Thoughts
Heavy sargassum doesn't mean the fishing has to be difficult. In fact, some of the best mahi, tuna, wahoo, and sailfish action occurs when large weed concentrations occur.
By keeping your lures closer to the boat, selecting weed-friendly lure designs, matching hook sizes correctly, and slightly increasing your trolling speed, you'll spend less time clearing weeds and more time fighting fish.
Whether you're targeting dolphin fish, blackfin tuna, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, wahoo, or other offshore predators, these simple adjustments can significantly improve your success when sargassum is abundant.
